Why Liberals Do What They Do

I thought you’d be interested in my view as to why liberals do what they do. First allow me to
emphasize to you I have no college degree or any training in psychology. However, I am a student
of human observation and as a former Marine, I have studied people all over the world. My
knowledge is completely theoretical and based on my own experiences in confronting, debating,
and educating members of the left.
That being said, lets delve into the psyche of the radical leftist shall we? As you know, being on the
left end of the political spectrum requires as certain perspective in viewing the world. Where a
conservative may see the glass as half full, those on the left see it as half empty. Meaning they
focus more on the negative aspects of life opposed the positive. I believe this comes from their
own failures or shortcomings in life and their need to blame others for those failures. Have you
ever heard a liberal blame anyone but the government for their problems? “I lost my job, it is Bush’
s fault.” Or “I don’t have healthcare, it is the governments fault.”
It is far easier to blame someone else for failure than it is to blame yourself. Just as it is far easier
to laugh at others rather than laugh at yourself. In the liberals mind, the state should have a say in
most every aspect of life. In their mind, if something is regulated by government, then it must be
better. It should be up to the government to protect us from those evil capitalists.
On the other side, a conservative believes in personal responsibility and it is up to us to protect
ourselves from those evil capitalists. A conservative believes in himself and having the ability to
judge for himself on what is best for him. The left believes that judgment should be left to those
who know best. In their mind, those judgments should be left to the state. If the judgments are left
to the state, then no one’s self esteem will be damaged by their own poor decisions.
Think about Social Security and our welfare system. These programs were created with the idea of
helping people in need. That is not a bad thing. Let’s face it, life is hard and we all need a little help
from time to time. Unfortunately, sometimes lending a helping hand isn’t the best solution.
Sometimes it creates dependency. If you help an individual repeatedly, they can easily begin to
depend on that help. At some point in history, the left has figured out that continually helping people
creates dependency. And if a person is dependent upon you, they will vote for you. They will want
you to stay in power because they need you in power.
For 40 years, the democrats controlled the congress. In those 40 years, they created a great deal of
dependency. So much so that it changed an entire culture into believing government is good,
government is needed. Over the years, the democrats insisted on being more and more involved in
every day things. They’ve become involved in business, in education, in the food we eat, in the cars
we drive, in the houses we build, in the land we own. The list goes on and on.
Then came Ronald Reagan, a man that viewed government as a hindrance. He understood that for
every law created by the government, that is just a little less freedom for the rest of us. He believed
a free America is a prosperous America. And a prosperous America is a proud America. His way
of thinking spawned an entire generation of free thinkers. And those free thinkers presented
themselves in the early to mid 90’s opposing big government, opposing the status quo and brought
with them a new Contract for America. These free thinkers presented themselves to the American
public and for the first time in 40 years, they took back the House and the Senate, the Republican
Revolution. You add in President Clinton who moved to the center to be elected, and never
successfully returned fully to the left, you’ve got the far left seeing their world beginning to crumble.
Since then, we have seen a resurgence of pride and personal responsibility. We’ve seen the
economy grow, unemployment shrink, and more entrepreneurs then in any time in American
History. Capitalism is working. Freedom is taking root again and that means more decisions for
individuals and less power for government. The country is shifting to the right and they don’t like it.
Logically, they start to analyze why they are failing. They start looking for what has worked in the
past. And what worked for them better than anything in their history? The radical 60’s.
In the 60’s they changed the course of a war. They changed the course of history. It was a
combination of radicalism and TV cameras that got them their victory. It was their time in the sun.
In evaluating what they have to do to win again, they’ve adopted what worked for them in the past.
They have to once again get extreme as they did in the 60’s.
The problem is, the times have changed. What was extreme in the 60’s is fairly common place
today. Long hair, ugly clothes, and bad language are no longer extreme, those are aspects of an
average day in any public junior high school. So they have to go even further. They have to become
even more extreme in order to get noticed. In order to propel their agenda, in the new world of 24
hour news; where the sound bite is everything, they have to go further than ever before.
Perhaps next time, I can explain why it won’t work.
