The Truth About the Pay Gap

Well, this is interesting...

Apparently, the report released last week that told us women make 77 cents to every dollar paid to men was not exactly honest. From the story:

"In reality, that's not clear at all. What we know from an array of evidence, including this report, is that most if not all of the discrepancy can be traced to factors other than sexism."

Wow, that's not how I heard it when reported on the Today Show.

It appears that once you account for the fact that women with college degrees tend to take lower paying jobs out of college, such as teaching, pschology and the humanities and are more likely to work for non-profit goups and local governments, this explains the so-called gender gap.

I want to make sure you see this part that is near the end of the story:

June O'Neill, an economist at Baruch College and former director of the Congressional Budget Office, has uncovered something that debunks the discrimination thesis. Take out the effects of marriage and child-rearing, and the difference between the genders suddenly vanishes. "For men and women who never marry and never have children, there is no earnings gap," she said in an interview.

Interesting...

This is not suprising to me. The professional women I know all take home solid paychecks. It is true that women don't get paid as much on average, but that is because many of them don't approach their careers with the same objectives as men do. They feel free to switch jobs, drop out of the workforce, or pursue higher degrees (which usually don't result in increased pay). I personally think it is a better approach; more rewarding. But the pay isn't as good.
