It's time to stop giving Paterno a free pass. give it up people...
This Penn State fan is rather irate. First my Lions turn around what has been a pretty dismal 5 years of football, with the exception of the 7-4 record a few years ago. They come out ranked something like #80th in the nation, rip off an 11-1 season and come within seconds of being undefeated. If i had to guess, the author of this article was one of the people saying "Paterno should retire, the game has passed him by" and now he's pissed off that he was wrong.
I don’t think JoePA should have said what he did about the sexual assault case; actually, I think he should have ignored the question. Joe is great at giving reporters attitude and rarely cares what they say about him. In fact, I don’t think the man reads newspapers for that reason, the media hates him. He said a few days ago in the Centre Daily Times that until the only people that mattered, the ones that play for him, called for his resignation, that he just considered the source.
What did I tell you; the media doesn’t get to him, at least not that he shows in public. Here is the quote from that article: "If my kids call for it (my resignation), if my squad calls for it ... but when people (who) don't know what they're doing are looking for publicity or trying to give publicity to their cause or looking for some sort of scapegoat, no, it doesn't bother me," the Penn State football coach told ESPN on Tuesday.
We looked at this as an example of political correctness at Fox Sports. Honestly, I’m not entirely sure that it is. If it is, this reporter is a fan of NOW. He didn’t seem to call for his resignation like they did, but simply an apology. Fact is, He won’t get it, and he knows it. Joe is as likely to apologize to you after insulting his thoughts as he is likely to come out tomorrow and announce his retirement.
Joe is a great coach, period. If you doubt that for a second, look at his coach of the year awards, or his win total, which is just a few shy of Bobby Bowden. He has never been good with the media, or enjoyed interviews. He says things because he basically wants them to shut up. But in turn, makes it great for them because of his quotes. He never means harm or approves of actions like the sexual assault, or the drinking incident with his own players. When asked how he’d handle it, he did say that he would discipline him to make an example of him, but that didn’t mean he was only doing it for that reason. They probably didn’t stop to think; maybe he’ll make it worse than normal to stop the rest from doing it.
As far as Paterno accusing ref’s of cheating or grabbing them by the shirt, here is my take, and always has been. I hate how the referee’s run like hell off the field or court when a game is over. The coaches have every right to question or argue, some do it well and it improved their relationships. If Joe had a question he has every right to go to them, yeah grabbing the shirt might have been much, but it was in the heat of the moment. Doesn’t make it right but was a close game, everyone was fired up and things happen. That’s how it should have been looked at and dismissed. The only reason people we’re fired up about that, and anytime he goes on an interview and questions officials, is because he’s Joe. He’s been around for 55 years at PSU; 40 of them as head coach, and a damn good one. If you notice, most of the people writing negatively about him aren’t from Pennsylvania, with the exception of Pitt fans. They hate his success, and that breeds anger.
Now obviously I may be, hell, I am, biased when it comes to PSU. But the media just loves to pick on Joe, because he isn’t good at interviews. He says things he doesn’t mean to a few people, others pick up on it and it just spreads like wildfire. NOW and the Media just need to lay off this. Joe isn’t going to resign, Penn State isn’t going to make him, and nothing will happen other than everyone looking like a bunch of whiners, as Rosenberg just ended up doing to himself. God Bless Joe and his endurance through all of this, PSU can only get better having him at the helm.
